Evidence for the use of basic D shape buckles have been found from the Roman and Celtic era through to the Viking, middle ages and into the renaissance.
D shape buckles appear to have been popular during the 12th and 13th century in Europe when other styles of highly decorative buckles from the earlier Viking period become less common.
The buckle best fits a strap between 20mm.
